Dive deeper into yoga philosophy and asana with the study of Sanskrit—the original language of yoga. This 6-week introductory online course, led by Yoga Journal contributing editor Richard Rosen, will help you refine your pronunciation, learn translations, and see yogic practices in a different light. Designed to be a beginner’s guide to Sanskrit, this course will cover the historical highlights of the language, the nuts and bolts of the written language in its Roman transliteration, a pronunciation guide of the vowels and consonants, and a closer look at 20 of the most common yoga terms in Sanskrit and 32 asana.

Week 1: Overview, History, the Basics
• Understand transliteration and diacritical marks + how to pronounce the vowels and consonants.
Week 2: 20 Important Yoga Words
• From ahimsa to yoga, learn the real meaning, literal translation, and proper pronunciation of words critical to communicating about the practice.
Week 3: Standing Poses
• Practice and teach these common poses knowing more about what they were named for and how to accurately say their names.
Week 4: Sitting Poses
• Practice and teach these common poses knowing more about what they were named for and how to accurately say their names.
Week 5: Backbends
• Practice and teach these common poses knowing more about what they were named for and how to accurately say their names.
Week 6: Review, Resources, and Wrap-Up
• Review what you have learned and get all you need to continue your study of Sanskrit!
