Sound Design for Media Composers 2022 – Simon Haglund
In todays industry, with every composer having access to the same libraries, one can easily fall into the trap of sounding generic. The logical next step for most composers is to develop their own musical language. But where to start? How can we develop our own signature sound? How about starting out by learning from an industry professional sound designer. In his course „Sound Design for Media Composers“ sound design expert Simon Haglund walks you through everything you need to know to create your own, one of a kind, sounds and effects. Aimed equally at trailer, tv, film and game composers as well as aspiring sound designers, this course will equip you with everything you need to stick out of the crowd.
Simon Haglund
Simon is the person who wants to do things his own way and push the boundaries out of the ordinary. What if you put 7 instances of a plugin in serial when you’re only supposed to have one? What if you resample a sound through an effect a 100 times when you are only supposed to do it once?
Simon is a professional sound designer and producer of trailer music. He had his music used by companies like Disney and Ubisoft. He is also one of the sound designers behind the popular software instruments from ”Falloutmusicgroup”. In his course ”Sound Design For Media Composers” you get his 1000’s of hours of experimentation and exploring presented to you in digestible packages.

Sound Design for Media Composers
The next four section introduce you to the process of learning with Simon
1 Fundamentals of Sound Design
Have you ever been wondering how the big, massive sounds in movies, trailers and games are created? Astonishing, earth-shattering sounds that keep the listeners fascinated?
The creation of those sounds start with knowing your fundamental sound design techniques. Pitch-shifting and layering sounds are basic, but super powerful sound design techniques that Simon and other sound designers use in almost all of their projects. In this first section of the course you learn about fundamental sound design skills, the mindset for sound designers and Simon’s most used plugins.
He covers topics like:
- resampling
- layering
- pitch-shifting
- gain matching
- plugins for sound design
- mindset
2 Organic Sound Design
Now that we have an understanding of the fundamental tenchniques and tools, it’s time to start making some sounds.
Modern games, trailers and movies constanntly make use of various differnt sounds like braams, downers, risers, whoosh hits, booms, signature sounds and many more. They all have their own function and place in today’s media.
In this section of the course you will learn how to produce these kind of sounds from organic sources. You will learn how you can create new, unique sounds from your orchestral sample libraries and how to use your own voice and props from your home to create truly unique sounds.
You will learn:
- how to transfrom orchestral samples into sound fx
- how to use your voice for sound design
- how to create braams
- how to create pings
- how to create risers
- how to create signature sounds and much more
3 Synth Sound Design
Did you know that all the sounds you made in the organic section can also be created by using soft synths?
Soft synths allow us to use a whole new palette of possibiites in our sound design process. Learning how to use them is the next crucial step on this musical journey.
By using synths we have full control, and are able to create a fitting sound for any given situation. You will learn how to come up with a sound and to develop it over time so it stays fresh and adapts to the different sections of your tracks.
In this section you will learn about many different kinds of synthesis like fm, granular, wavetable and west coast synthesis
Simon teaches how to:
- resample to other synths
- use detuning
- use modulation
- create arps
- create downers
- create bends
- create braams
- create pads and much more
4 Walkthroughs
In the fourth and final section Simon puts everything we have learned so far into practice.
There still might be some unanswered questions left which Simon answers by walking you through some sound design heavy tracks.
How do we actually use those sounds we have created?
How do we apply them to the three acts of a trailer cue or a slow, subtle underscore?
And what about custom sound design for a certain track, how do we create it?
In the fourth and final section of the course Simon answers these questions as he walks you through four different sound design tracks in 4 different genres.
Learn how to:
- apply sound design elements to the different acts of a track
- blend sound design with orchestral elements
- arrange and layer differents sound to make them evolve over full tracks
- arrange, modify, automate and modulate one shot samples to make them grow over time
- write sound design tracks to a specific brief
- blend sample libraries with your own sound design and much more
