Description
The rate of substance use and abuse in women is on the rise and often unidentified or poorly managed by health care professionals. This lecture will help practitioners identify problematic use as well as how to address the issue in a non-judgmental approach. With the goal of improving women’s health, healthcare disparities, resource limitations, and stigma to substance use disorders.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify risk factors for women in addiction and treatment options.
2. Highlight the rates of maternal drug use on west coast CA-WA.
3. Screening and referral to treatment for pregnant women with opioid use disorder.
4. Review and discuss current guidelines and approaches to addressing benzodiazepines in pregnancy.
5. Address specific needs of women in treatment of substance use disorder.

Dr. Elizabeth Barrera is board certified in Family Practice and completed an Addiction Medicine Fellowship with an emphasis on High Risk Obstetrics at Swedish Medical Group in Seattle. Dr. Barrera serves as an attending physician at Evergreen Recovery Center and EvergreenHealth Hospital in Monroe WA. At the recovery center she oversees the Chemically Using pregnant women program which provides prenatal care and substance use treatment in a 26-day inpatient program.
Dr. Barrera was the resident board member for OPSC from 2013-2015 while a resident at PIH Health Hospital in Downey, CA.
Dr. Barrera completed medical school at COMP in Pomona, CA and completed a pre-Doctoral Teaching Fellowship in Osteopathic Manipulation.
